Make Your Choice the Right One
People often get stuck in hesitation, always weighing which choice is safer. We fear making mistakes and try to chase a perfect, guaranteed answer, spending countless time doubting ourselves.
Yet in fact, no choice in this world is born right. You just have to make a choice and then you make it the right decision. You can’t just think, “Is this right? Is this wrong? Did I make the right decision?” No, you just make a choice and you just make it the best decision that you ever need.
Let me share three stories from different stages of life to illustrate this idea.
The first story is about my teacher, Echo. In college, he studied Public Affairs Administration. Most of his classmates were placed into this major due to the adjustment process, which was against their will. They saw it as a valueless major with limited prospects. Surrounded by this negative atmosphere, Echo once felt lost and unsure about his future.
Instead of staying trapped in doubt, he embraced his choice and invested consistent hard work. Every day, he got up early at 6 a.m. to read, sat in the front row in classes, and always asked teachers questions. Through strict self-discipline, he was admitted to Sun Yat-sen University, ranking first in both his major assessments and English interviews. The critical thinking, resource-coordinating skills, and understanding of human behavior that he gained from his previous major became the foundation of his educational career today. By exerting himself, he turned an underestimated choice into genuine, lasting value.
The second story is about Bella, my teacher as well. She once worked at a Red Circle law firm in China, with a clear career path that most people would consider perfect. Still, she found herself passionate about education, hoping to help young people speak with confidence and think critically. Before quitting, she struggled with uncertainty: torn between her stable lawyer job and the unknown education field, while facing doubt from people she respects.
She eventually followed her heart and made the change. She brought the rigorous logic and resilience she had built in law into her teaching. Under her kind, insightful, and wise guidance, shy students found the courage to speak up and learned to think critically. Over time, she was deeply loved and trusted by every student as an inspiring mentor. She poured her passion and energy into every class, turning a controversial choice into a deeply fulfilling journey.
The final story is about myself. When I chose to leave the traditional education system for an international curriculum, many people questioned my decision. Indeed, remaining in the familiar system,I can enjoy a stable learning rhythm and a well-established exam-oriented path, follow the prescribed order step by step to complete my academic advancement plan, and ensure a smoother educational journey. But I chose to walk away from those advantages. In my new environment, I had to rely mostly on myself—no fixed schedules handed to me, no teachers constantly checking my progress, no ready-made answers waiting at the end of a chapter. I had to learn how to learn again.
The change was challenging at first. There were moments of confusion, loneliness, and self-doubt. I questioned whether I had made the right choice. But what’s valuable is that, without shortcuts or external help, I learned to plan a fulfilling schedule, collaborate with people from different backgrounds, and solve problems independently. I stopped regretting the opportunities I had given up and instead focused on improving myself—bit by bit, day by day.Gradually, I shaped this unique path into one that not only fits me but also empowers me.
Echo, Bella, and I, all three of us have stood at crossroads of choice, confused by uncertainty. Our journeys prove that while it is natural to overthink choices, what’s really important is that everyone can shape their decisions with genuine effort.
Echo、Bella
I hope these three stories can bring you some inspiration today. So please remember: when you are hesitating, making a choice is never about predicting how it will turn out — what truly defines the result is how much patience, persistence, and passion you’re willing to pour in.
Thank you.
Dearest Katrina, your words washed over me like a tide of profound emotion. To be truly seen, understood, and written about by a student you cherish so deeply is the greatest privilege any educator could ever ask for.
You spoke eloquently of our transition, but what truly takes my breath away is your own story. To leave the safe harbor of a familiar education system and sail into the uncharted waters of an international curriculum demands a warrior’s spirit. You are living proof that greatness is not found in making the “safe” choice, but in the grit it takes to make your choice right.
Like travelers who found courage at our respective crossroads, we chose the path less traveled. To see you grow into a thinker of such profound empathy and sharp intellect is the ultimate reward for my own choice. Never stop shining. Whatever choice you weave into the tapestry of your future, I know you will turn it into a masterpiece.
